What We've Been Doing

The last week or two have been kind of uninspiring for blog material. Here are some pictures of what we've been doing:
I made my trusty Honey Oatmeal Bread. It turned out so beautiful that I had to take a picture.Sunday morning I had a 7:15am meeting, so Landon made the girls fried potato pancakes with some leftover mashed potatoes. I found this picture on the camera, so I'm assuming it was pretty noteworthy to the girls. Sunday I had my early meeting, 3 hours of church, followed by 4 hours of visits with various ladies in the ward. Long day.It keeps snowing! We'll have some really nice spring weather, then several days of cold weather. This is a picture of one of the townhouse buildings that is being constructed. We should have the last 7 buildings finished and landscaped by August. (As I told the wife of the project manager, "I'll believe it when I see it." I doubt she appreciated my attitude.)This is me, taking my 10 minute break. (That's what I call my afternoon "down time".) Kitty likes to rest on my neck/chest. We think we found a new home for him. Mr. Bowman, Emma's teacher, has a farm/ranch in Ashton. He likes to keep 2-3 barn cats, and he's got room for one more. We decided that Kitty is too much cat for the LeFevre family to handle. We cower in our bedrooms every morning, afraid to go out to the hallway, because the cat attacks our legs and feet. He's incredibly active and playful, and we're hopelessly sedentary. We have recently discovered that the girls' brains have developed enough to play Scrabble now. It's really fun! We played a few times when we had family visiting for Lauren's baptism, and we played last night with them. Lauren likes to tell Landon when they're playing on the same team, "Don't worry Dad, I've got it all figured out," then starts laying down a word on her own. (She came up with "zen" last night.) The only problem when we play board games with the girls is that they inevitably get silly and crazy and we end the game yelling at them to go upstairs and get ready for bed. (Look at the picture! You can see Lauren had already been ordered upstairs to get her pajamas on, and the girls are acting silly.)

Happiest Day Ever

Cafe Rio opened in Idaho Falls today. We were there. We didn't even know it was opening today, but we went to check it out and there were people eating inside! We were so excited! Next Friday everything at Cafe Rio is free, to promote their grand opening. We'll be in line.
While in Idaho Falls we went to JoAnns for a great deal on McCalls patterns (.99 cents) and summer fabric (tutti-fruitti) $1.99/yard. I got the girls 4 patterns and enough fabric for at least 6 pairs of shorts/capris for $20.
After Idaho Falls, we headed to Swan Valley and Palisades Reservoir to explore. I didn't have my camera, but we crossed the Palisades dam and let the girls play in the mud along the shore of the reservoir. We also stopped at the square ice-cream cone place in Swan Valley (it's called Rainey Creek). We had a pretty fun day. We're looking forward to going to Yellowstone in the next week or two to see all the spring babies.(I didn't have my camera, but I found this kid holding a square ice cream cone from Rainey Creek when I did a Google image search.)

Funny Lauren Comment

Lauren was telling Landon about someone named "Chris" at school. Landon said, Chris who? Lauren said, "Chris...topher." She's funny.

Slow Week

Emma has been home for 3 days from school because of a stomach virus on top of her ongoing chronic constipation issues. Lucky for us Albertsons is having a sale this week on lots of fiber-rich products. We stocked up on Fiber-One poptarts, granola bars, and cereal, plus all kinds of other tasty snack items and boneless, skinless chicken breast for $1.88/pound. I spent about $60 and saved $90 today.
I started Weight Watchers online yesterday. So far, I like it. It's cheaper than the weekly meetings version of Weight Watchers, and as of Day 2, I'm still motivated.
I accepted a sub job for Friday in a math classroom at the high school. The teacher told me that the kids might ask me questions about the basic geometry worksheet he's giving them, but that's all I need to worry about. That's a lot for me to worry about. I took geometry 24 years ago. Anything for $55!

Recent LeFevre Quotes

Me: Why does Abel wear cologne to school?
Landon: That's not cologne, that's refried beans.
(Abel is a mexican kid in Landon's class. He has a really strong smell of after-shave/cologne. Landon swears it's just refried beans.)

Me: Don't play rough with the kitty. He just had a little surgery and isn't feeling well yet.

Lauren: Yeah, he had his balls chopped off.
(The girls had friends over to play on Friday after school. I was warning them to leave the cat alone. Lauren was helping me, I guess.)

Landon: I wanted to see if it tasted like pork rinds.

(He picked some dead skin off his finger from a cut he obtained with the mandolin while slicing cucumbers last week. I watched him put the skin in his mouth at church. That was his response.)

Friday Night Wienie Roast

Morris called us last night and asked if we wanted to cook hotdogs over a fire somewhere. The funny thing is, we were talking at exactly that moment about going to cook hot dogs over a fire somewhere. It was meant to be. Heidi was in Boise running a half marathon, so we ate her share of calories.
While we got the fire ready, the girls rode their bikes on the dirt road surrounding the BYU-Idaho Henry's Fork property (where we went to cook out). This property is right along the river, so the girls and Ketti and Jens played along the shore too.The wienie roast in action. We learned that Emma doesn't know how to "squat." It was really funny to try to teach her how to squat her legs (see how Morris is squatting? Emma can't do that). We had s'mores for dessert made with leftover Easter Peeps. This is the only way I'll eat Peeps, by the way. Landon loves them any way they come.

Landon and Jens, enjoying their Peeps S'mores.

A Few Things

A few things...
  1. The diet's off. I hate it. I don't know how I did it for so long before. This week I lost 10 pounds, but those pounds will be right back any minute. I'm looking into Weight Watchers online next.
  2. I bought the DVD, The Fiddler on the Roof, at the dollar store a while ago. I made my family watch all 3 hours of it today. I knew the words to all of the songs thanks to my dad. As I grew up, I think he thought he was Tevye, the main character. I think my sisters and mom would agree that "If I Were A Rich Man" is somewhat of a theme song for my dad. (And the song "Take This Job and Shove It"--not from Fiddler on the Roof.)
  3. The talks went well. Glad they're over.
  4. We're allowing Kitty to have little unsupervised outings now that he's fixed. It's kind of win-win. He poops outside and he comes in tired from his adventures.

Easter Egg Hunt

Every year since Emma was 2, we've participated in either a neighborhood Easter Egg hunt, or we've invited a family over for a backyard Easter Egg hunt. This evening we held the first egg hunt at the Meadows. The girls had a blast.

The mystery black kid who appears at the end of the video just moved into the Meadows today. His mom is from Haiti and "as black as night" according to my neighbor, Brook.

After the hunt. (Thunder had started to boom and rain was beginning to pour.)

An Easter Miracle

Today Landon and I went to Walmart to look for some Easter stuff for the girls' Easter baskets. The Easter aisle was picked over and nothing good was left. Long story short, we came home with 2 new bikes for the girls, which they really needed. The Easter miracle is that Lauren actually learned how to ride her bike within about an hour (no training wheels)! Last year we worked on it, but she screamed and cried every time we tried. This year I was determined that my 8 year old was not going to be the joke of the townhouse community for not knowing how to ride a 2 wheeler.

Lauren and Emma posing with their new bikes. Emma's bike has 7 speeds and hand brakes (not coaster brakes). It was originally $118, marked down to $64. The other Easter miracle was that I ran up and down the street helping Lauren learn how to ride her bike. Me, running, is something only my kid could motivate me to do.

Random Tidbits

Yesterday the girls and I went to the Museum of Idaho to see the Titanic exhibit. I'd never been to the museum before, so since Landon had a 10-page paper to write and it was spring break, the girls and I spent the day in Idaho Falls. The exhibit was really interesting and the girls really enjoyed it. We also spent a lot of time in the children's room, which is always in the museum. It is an interactive display with a history of frontier Idaho for kids to explore. I thought my kids might be too old to enjoy it, but they didn't want to leave! There was a log cabin for them to play "house" in, pioneer clothes to wear, a water pump to get water, dishes, furniture, etc. I loved watching them play house and act like they did when they were 2 and 4 years old. I thought those days were coming to an end, but I was glad to see they still like to pretend.
Our family got "sucker punched" on Sunday. We made the mistake of answering the phone between sessions of conference. We were asked to speak this Sunday (Easter!) in sacrament meeting--all four of us. That means that Mom gets to prepare 3 talks instead of one. The best part is that my assignment is to speak on Elder Uchtdorf's Sunday morning conference talk, which isn't even in print online until Thursday! I have already listened to it 3 times, but it will really help prepare my talk when I can read it. Landon gets the "Easter Message" assignment.
Another newsworthy event is that our cat gets neutered tomorrow morning. As Landon told him, "there's only room for one set of balls in this house...because they're giant ones" We're all hoping the cat calms down after his little procedure. He's driving us crazy. Both girls have already requested that Landon take him out to the desert for some target practice. We're giving him a few weeks to see if the neutering helps calm him down a bit.
Remember my low-carb diet? The one where I lost 110 pounds a few years ago? Well, I started it again yesterday. I've managed to gain 25 pounds since November without even blinking. The good news is, I lost 7 pounds overnight. I ate mushrooms, bacon and eggs for breakfast, chicken caesar salad for lunch, and steak, asparagus, salad and a potato for dinner. I had string cheese for a snack last night. Lauren ate 9 stalks of asparagus at dinner and said, "I can't believe I didn't ask for this for my birthday dinner." She loves her veggies.
I'll keep my blog updated on my progress. If I can lose about 50 pounds, then I'll switch over to something healthy like weight watchers or something.

General Conference

We were able to get tickets for the Saturday afternoon session of General Conference. We drove down to Kristen's house on Friday, in time for lunch at Cafe Rio. We walked around Costco, shopped at Walmart, then just hung out with the Finau's watching High School Musical 3 and visiting. Landon got really sick Friday night and barely slept all night, but we still made it to conference. (Landon actually ran into his superintendent in the conference center and said hello.) The girls were exceptionally well-behaved and just took it all in. It was pretty amazing to see how huge the conference center is and to enjoy listening to the talks in person. We took our time driving home, and made it home by about 9:30pm Saturday night. Even though Landon was sick all day, even he said he'd do it again if we got tickets.

Landon had forgotten his white shirt at home, but went on a quick run to DI and found a XXLT white shirt (his size) at DI for $5. Amazing, since we can't even find that size in a regular store. There were thousands of people, so we made sure to hold hands tightly.

No photography is allowed in the conference center, but everyone else was taking pictures, so I took one. This is before the general authorities entered the room. There was an incident with Oliviana where she pulled Lauren's hair kind of hard a couple of times. Lauren cried because that's pretty much the most painful thing you can do to Lauren. In an effort to discipline Oliviana, Kristen pulled Oliviana's hair and asked her if she likes how that feels. Oliviana said, "yes." So I guess that's one difference between Lauren and Oliviana.Three fake smiles.

A Long Post With Lots of Details

When we weren't at the baptism, we were in the pool at the hotel (Americinn) that Nana and the rest of the LeFevre's stayed at. The babies loved playing in the water, and my girls turned into human prunes. They were in the pool about 4 hours on Saturday afternoon. Also on Saturday, Kristen, Nase, Oliviana, Lorina, Christina, Justin, Stacy, Landon and I went to the Texas Roadhouse in Idaho Falls. It was a big deal for Landon and me, because we rarely leave our house after it gets dark, and Saturday night we actually ate dinner at about 8:00pm. We enjoyed getting away and having some adult conversation. Even though Oliviana came with, she was well-behaved and since I didn't have to take care of her, I couldn't have cared less. As long as my kids weren't with us, I was fine.
Sunday afternoon (Justin, Stacy and Lincoln had already gone home), we made a spiral-cut ham, prime-rib roast (I can't remember the cut, actually, but it was amazing), garlic mashed potatoes, salad and breadsticks from the pizza place the day before that we hadn't cooked. We were all able to sit around our table and enjoy the meal together. The best part (besides the company) was the raspberry/chipotle sauce poured directly on the meat. You have to buy this stuff if you have a Costco around.
Then, Kristen, Manaze, Oliviana and my mom took off for Utah, and we played Scrabble with Nana, Lorina and Christina. During our Scrabble game, an enormous blizzard showed up! It was white-out conditions and everything! Landon drove his family back to their hotel, which is under a mile from our house, and dropped off our girls to spend the night with them. We were able to spend Sunday night without kids. It was such a treat. The first thing I did was clean my house. I get a little crazy if my house isn't pretty clean. I restrained myself from vacuuming until the next morning. After that, we ordered Vicky Cristina Barcelona from Dish On Demand. Don't waste your time. Pretty trashy.
So when I picked up the girls Monday morning, I found out that Emma had thrown up twice in the night and both girls hadn't gotten much sleep (to be expected at a sleepover). They were tired and sick. Christina had also gotten sick, so she stayed at the hotel while Lorina, Nana and the girls and I headed for Idaho Falls for some shopping and lunch. The girls got some cute shoes (Payless) and accessories (at Claire's), then we ate lunch at Babe's Bakery in IF. If you've never eaten there, try it some time. They have homemade dressings, breads, soups and quiches. Yummy.
By the time I got my girls back in the truck to drive home after dropping off Nana and Lorina at their hotel, they were both bawling like babies. Lauren was inconsolable. I changed her into her jammies and tucked her in my bed and she was out for 3 hours. Emma was very eager to get back into her own bed after being displaced for 10 nights, so she got into her bed and also slept 3 hours. By the time the girls woke up, I was feeling sick. Then Landon came home from school and he was feeling sick. I went to bed at 5:30pm and the rest of the night was a blurr. Landon and I both threw up about 9:00pm, felt dizzy, chills, and feverish until morning. By the morning, we were both feeling much better. Landon and Emma made it to school, but Lauren was sick all day yesterday and is home again today. I had to cancel a 2-day sub job to stay home with her. Poor kid. Nana, Lorina and Christina headed home around noon yesterday after a quick stop to see Landon's classroom.
In the meantime, our dryer had stopped heating, so I couldn't keep up the laundry (another thing that makes me feel sane). During all the sickness on Monday, we carried our dryer down the stairs and loaded it into the back of the truck. Landon has a contact at an appliance store in town and he was able to fix the dryer free of charge for us, if we brought it to him. He fixed it, and Landon brought it back and we carried it back up the stairs. (Dryers are heavy when you're sick.) I had 7 loads of laundry to do Tuesday.
All and all, we had a fun time hosting a special event with so many family members. It was definitely a new experience for us, because we live so far away from everyone. It was busy, kind of stressful, but very rewarding and fun. We are very grateful so many could make the long trip to visit and make Lauren's baptism so special and memorable.
Very scary picture of Emma.

The After-Baptism Party

After the baptism, we had a little party at the Meadow's Clubhouse. We rented it for 4 hours so we could eat, play and visit with each other. I think the babies had fun running around and playing in the kids' playroom. Here's Stacy with some of the food. I had made 8 loaves of bread (pumpkin, coconut, lemon, poppyseed and almond), mainly for Nase's benefit. He had given up going to his final Rugby tournament of the season to be at Lauren's baptism (all his idea, Kristen didn't even ask him to sacrifice his game) so I made the bread with him in mind. He enjoys baked goods. Then we had See's candy, cream cheese with raspberry/chipotle sauce over the top and crackers (the sauce is from Costco and is awesome!), Girl Scout cookies, salad with cranberries, feta cheese, almonds and vinaigrette (salad mix from Sam's club--go buy it, it's good) and then 4 Papa Murphy's pizzas. I thought the food was fantastic.
Visiting and eating in the clubhouse. The clubhouse has 3 big "love sacs" to lounge on.

Emma and Lauren had prepared a little performance on their keyboard (given them by Lorina and Christina for Christmas) with their microphone. It was really cute. Oliviana and Lincoln enjoyed some dancing after the girls finished their songs.

Lauren's Baptism

Lauren's baptism was a fun day. She was sweet and endured all the attention and excitement well. She looked beautiful and I think she took it seriously enough to really "get" what she was doing. She told me she felt really special when she first came out of the water. By Sunday morning, she was in tears saying, "I'm really glad I got baptized, but enough already! Let's move on!" She was overwhelmed with all the attention, anticipating walking to the front of the congregation at church to be "presented" as the newest member, etc. We're just not used to having so much going on at our house and I think it was starting to get to her.
(I have way more pictures than this, but I think I'll make a slideshow with all the baptism weekend pictures in a later post. I need help with that kind of project and my helper is at work.) This is Lauren just after she got her jumpsuit on. She was really happy. The money shot. After she was baptized, she wore a cute dress we bought at Burlington Coat Factory. I'm not one to support my girls wearing foo-foo white dresses reminiscent of Catholic christenings or weddings. It goes against the current trend in our church right now, but my girls are victims of my strong opinions, so they knew better than to ask for a white dress. Lauren's was a great compromise, I thought. In her hair, she wanted to wear a special bow barrette that she had made in an after-school class called, "Girls and Curls."
We loved that so many in our family could come to Lauren's baptism. Portia Loosli, my brother's mother-in-law from Ashton, also made it, which was really thoughtful. You'll see Landon's mom, 2 sisters, Lorina and Christina, brother Justin with wife Stacy and baby boy, Lincoln. Then there was my mom, sister Kristen with husband Manase and baby Oliviana.
